FORUM GUIDELINES
Before you start posting to your heart’s content, please take a gander at this important text. The following are some "guidelines to harmonious living" here at the forum:
1. This is a University of Waterloo Chinese Christian Fellowship (UWCCF) Forum
This is, first and foremost, a UWCCF forum. This means that we uphold the same beliefs and ideals as the UWCCF body. If you are unsure of what that exactly means or entails, you can take a look at Who We Are, and a little bit about our Beliefs at the main UWCCF website.
As members of this forum, you are expected to represent this forum to the best of your ability. This means that you are to act appropriately when representing us in other media (forums, real life, etc.) and to refrain from libel (such as making defamatory statement against another entity) of any sort while posting on this forum. Be sensitive when addressing problems, and avoid naming names whenever possible to avoid unnecessary conflict.
2. Observe Forum Etiquette
We ask that you observe fundamental forum etiquette. This guideline has many facets; here are a few to give you a better understanding:
Flaming. Any form of personal attack against another person or party that is unwarranted and/or unfounded. A more specific form of flaming can be volatile remarks that are blatantly racial, sexual, or homophobic. Trolling, or inciting and antagonizing others is also prohibited. This is fairly straight-forward; leave your fighting words to yourself.
Profanity. Wikipedia tells us that something that is profane is said to be something “not belonging to the church.” This includes, but is not limited to: cursing, swearing, blaspheming, strong and perverted language, and derogatory language. Thank you Wikipedia!
Respect. This may be the internet and you may believe you have some degree of anonymity, however here we still demand respect from all of our forum members. Respect your elders, the moderators and administrators, and each other.
Spamming. We discourage excessive, overly large or capitalized (i.e. I WANT TO RIDE ON THE PONY!) and/or redundant (i.e. I WANT TO RIDE ON THE PONY! I WANT TO RIDE ON THE PONY!) posts. We also ask that you refrain from posting twice in a row and use the Edit feature instead.
Advertising. Telling your friends about your new website is all fine and dandy. However, please do not advertise on this site for the sake of collecting benefits in any form.
Illegal And/Or Inappropriate Material. Please do not request, aid, or make posts regarding material such as illegal software, video/audio files, etc. This also includes inappropriate material of macabre or pornographic nature.
3. Maintain Clean Debate
Ahhh, good ol’ debate! The platform for which views are given, ideas are exchanged, and knowledge is spread! I know we all just love to debate, but please keep a few things in mind whilst letting the words fly:
A debate is an exchange of ideas; an argument is an exchange of ignorance. You are not arguing with each other, you are introducing ideas so that they can be analyzed and critiqued, and hopefully refined. (Technically in debates each side presents ‘arguments’ but that is beside the point!)
If the other party end ups angry or upset, you have lost. In the heat of the debate, do not let said heat lead you to try and get a rise out of the other person. Be careful what you say. An angry or insulted person is not going to listen to what you have to say whether you are right or not. Everyone will be too busy appeasing or arguing for any real discussion to take place. And by “lost” I mean that you have lost the chance for your voice to be heard.
5. Think
If you have read nothing else in this thread, read this! (Well I think you would miss this section of the post if you intended to read nothing...)
Think before you post. Have you ever heard of the phrase, “think before you speak?” This should be even easier. Typing takes a little bit longer than speaking. Read over your post and ask yourself: Is this an appropriate thing to say? Is my post in anyway disrespectful? Is it unambiguous enough as to not be taken as disrespectful? Am I getting the point I want to get across?... Am I even posting in the right forum
6. Have Fun!
Have fun. We hope that this forum is a blessing to you, and that you will benefit from the discussion, knowledge, and fellowship that is created here.
